Defending Life
When we speak of “defending life,” we start from this biblical truth: life is a divine gift for all. This topic is often polarized, limited to debates about abortion or the right to be born. But from a Christian bioethics perspective, defending life is much more than that: it means advocating for the dignity of every human being at all stages of their existence.
“He is the one who gives to all life, breath, and all things.” – Acts 17:25
In our recent video, we explore precisely this idea: defending life not only encompasses the protection of the unborn, but also how we address issues like the death penalty, physician-assisted suicide, and viable access to health care.
Defending life is asking ourselves:
How do we treat the lives of those who are charged with the death penalty?
How do we compassionately accompany those facing terminal illnesses, without hastening death or unnecessarily prolonging suffering?
And, of course, how do we ensure that every person has access to the medical care they need?
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10
Furthermore, defending life also occurs in conversation with the institutions of our society that regulate education, health, security, and the common good. Laws and public policies can either foster or diminish the experience of human life on earth. As Christians, we are called not only to a change of heart, but also to a critical dialogue with our laws and communities to build a society that truly values life at all stages.
From the scope of Christian bioethicsdefending life means much more than an ideological stance. It's a comprehensive and compassionate commitment. It's a call to see the image of God in every human being and to act accordingly: with justice, mercy, and truth.
