The case in Finland and its implications for Puerto Rico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent case in Finland where the Supreme Court reopened a trial against the parliamentarian&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/decisionmagazine.com\/finnish-supreme-court-to-hear-paivi-rasanen-case-in-october\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/decisionmagazine.com\/finnish-supreme-court-to-hear-paivi-rasanen-case-in-october\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P\u00e4ivi R\u00e4s\u00e4nen<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and the bishop&nbsp;<strong>Juhana Pohjola<\/strong>&nbsp;has set off alarm bells throughout the Christian world. Both face legal proceedings for having publicly expressed biblical teachings on human sexuality. The reason? They are accused of \"hate speech\" simply for relying on what the Scriptures teach on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This next&nbsp;<strong>October 2025<\/strong>Finland's highest court will rehearse the case, despite lower courts having previously acquitted the defendants. This judicial insistence reveals the growing pressure from sectors seeking to redefine morality and silence Christian voices in the public sphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e4a1c89b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>A case that transcends borders<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>R\u00e4s\u00e4nen, a physician and Lutheran parliamentarian, published a pamphlet on biblical sexuality in 2004 and shared a passage from Romans on Twitter in 2019. Bishop Pohjola, who endorsed the publication, was also charged. Although lower courts ruled that quoting the Bible does not constitute a crime, the Supreme Court decided to reopen the case, potentially setting an international precedent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Scripture reminds us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBlessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you for My sake\u201d (<strong>Matthew 5:11<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-036c2293\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Hate laws: protection or persecution?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The so called&nbsp;<strong>hate speech laws<\/strong>&nbsp;In Finland, they were originally designed to protect minority groups against real threats of violence. However, in practice, their application has become a mechanism for&nbsp;<strong>criminalize Christian convictions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Pohjola, the State interprets the biblical exposition on sexuality as a \u201charmful\u201d attack on the dignity of people, equating the proclamation of <strong>Romans 1<\/strong> or <strong>Genesis 1:27<\/strong> with incitement to hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is problematic for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It confuses violence with conviction<\/strong>: equates citing or preaching a biblical text with attacking a person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It redefines pluralism<\/strong>: Only views aligned with the dominant ideology are accepted, excluding the Christian faith from public debate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It creates a self-censorship effect<\/strong>Christian pastors, teachers, and doctors are afraid to express their faith for fear of legal consequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It opens the door to more censorship<\/strong>today it's sexuality, tomorrow it will be the right to defend life from conception or to reject euthanasia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The apostle Peter exhorts us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt is necessary to obey God rather than men\u201d (<strong>Acts 5:29<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/bioetica.net\/mision\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1324\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">t\u00e9rminos bio\u00e9ticos<\/a>, esta tendencia implica un giro alarmante: si el Estado define el bien y el mal moral, entonces se despoja a la sociedad de un di\u00e1logo plural y verdadero. En vez de un debate libre sobre temas como sexualidad, familia, vida o muerte, se impone una visi\u00f3n oficial que considera intolerable toda voz distinta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-17f71a1d\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Puerto Rico and the importance of the Religious Freedom Act<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While faith is criminalized in Europe, Puerto Rico took an important step with the approval of the&nbsp;<strong>Law No. 14 of 2025 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/bvirtualogp.pr.gov\/ogp\/Bvirtual\/leyesreferencia\/PDF\/14-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bvirtualogp.pr.gov\/ogp\/Bvirtual\/leyesreferencia\/PDF\/14-2025.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Law on the Fundamental Right to Religious Freedom<\/a><\/strong>This law recognizes religious freedom as a&nbsp;<strong>fundamental right<\/strong>, applicable to all citizens, including government employees, students, hospitalized patients, and even those confined in prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Its main elements include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protection against undue burdens from the State<\/strong>: no law may restrict religious freedom unless the government demonstrates a compelling interest and there is no less burdensome means to achieve it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guarantees in education<\/strong>: students may express religious beliefs in school work, clothing, accessories, and activities, and teachers may engage in expressions of faith outside of their official roles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual access in hospitals and nursing homes<\/strong>: it ensures that patients and residents can receive visits from religious leaders, even in emergencies such as pandemics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reasonable accommodations at work<\/strong>: it compels the government to adjust conditions so that employees can live their faith without penalties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Right of legal action<\/strong>: any citizen whose right has been violated may sue the State and receive damages and fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This recognition is in full harmony with the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/es\/about-us\/universal-declaration-of-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/es\/about-us\/universal-declaration-of-human-rights\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a><\/strong>, which establishes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEveryone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, individually or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, while Finland attempts to restrict faith through hate laws, both international law and Puerto Rican legislation point to the need for&nbsp;<strong>protect and expand<\/strong>&nbsp;the freedom of citizens to live and express their faith in public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ffebb500\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>What can you do about it?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn't a distant issue unique to Finland. The trend toward using \"hate speech\" laws to silence Christian beliefs is already underway in many Western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We invite you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Get informed<\/strong>: read about the case of R\u00e4s\u00e4nen and Pohjola, and understand its implications for all of us who believe in the authority of the Bible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pray<\/strong>: ask God for strength for persecuted Christians, discernment for the leaders of our churches&nbsp;<strong>and justice for those affected in this case in Finland<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take action<\/strong>contact your legislators in Puerto Rico and the United States. Let them know that you support religious freedom and reject any attempt to criminalize biblical teaching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defend true pluralism<\/strong>: promote laws like Puerto Rico's, which ensure that no faith is silenced and that public debate remains open.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f4ff13a4\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Food for Thought<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>History shows us that when God's Word is restricted, the entire society loses. The Gospel is not hatred, it is transforming love. To remain silent in the face of these judgments would be to abdicate our prophetic responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us remember Paul's exhortation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDo not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind\u201d (<strong>Romans 12:2<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In times of trial, the Church is called to be light and salt.
